Deering High School and the University of New England are partnering together in the Health Science Leadership Program, designed to help high school students explore health careers and set college goals.

The four-year program begins in the students’ freshman year and continues each school year with learning and career exploration activities.

“We have more than 25 students participating in the eight sessions held at Deering High School throughout the school year,” said Kristen Wiegand, Deering’s extended learning opportunities coordinator. “Students will explore health careers, develop skills needed for success in a health career, participate in science and math activities, visit colleges and set their goals, along with receiving academic support to reach those goals.”

She said the program is made possible by the Northern New England Diversity Grant Project, which encourages the participation of students who identify as, or have family that identify as, immigrants or refugees to the United States. The Maine Immigrant Access Network is also an integral part of the success of the program, Wiegand said.

“Students will also have the opportunity to take part in Doc4ADay with Maine Medical Center and attend a simulation lab where they will learn exciting things like suturing and taking blood pressure, not to mention being exposed to the medical environment,” she said. “We appreciate this partnership bringing such a great opportunity to our students.”
