On Thursday, Dec. 13, Casco Bay High School ninth-graders will present a Build Community Symposium. At the event, the students will share with the local community their urban planning proposals and development ideas, as well as information about local organizations.

The symposium will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Rines Auditorium and adjacent meeting rooms at the Portland Public Library. The public is invited to come and help the CBHS Class of 2022 make a positive difference in our community!

For the past few months, CBHS ninth-graders have been studying how intentional, successful, and thriving communities can be successfully built, with a specific focus on building community in Portland.

This learning expedition kicked off with ninth-grade students meeting representatives from a wide variety of local organizations and learning more from Portland’s Planning Department about the city’s most recent Comprehensive Plan. Students also listened to an expert presentation from the Portland Society for Architecture. In addition, they went into the field to explore Morrill’s Corner, in order to ground themselves in a location that could be developed in Portland’s future.

Following this, students selected a local organization to represent. Each student worked to write an individual urban planning proposal that advocates for a particular project that aligns with the mission and goals of their chosen organization. Students have spent the last few weeks collaborating with other students who are representing the same organization in order to create a booth focusing on their local organization, the importance of the work happening at that organization, and why the community should support current and future projects of the organization.

Students will host these booths at the culminating event of their expedition: the Build Community Symposium on Dec. 13.

Students have also created physical urban development plans in their geometry course. These physical plans will be viewable in the basement of the library during the symposium.

The following organizations have partnered with CBHS on this expedition and will be represented in the symposium: Avesta Housing; Casco Bay Estuary Partnership; Creative Portland; Cultivating Community; Cumberland County Community Development; ecomaine; Furniture Friends; Goodwill of Northern New England; Greater Portland Health; GMRI; Island Institute; Maine Initiatives; Maine Youth Rock Orchestra; Portland Public Health; Portland Society for Architecture; and the West End Neighborhood Association. CBHS is grateful to these organizations for their support and partnership.
