 | Painting for Purpose Auction Helps PPS Students Help Others Posted on 10/31/2016 The Painting for a Purpose annual fall auction will take place on Thursday, Nov. 3, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at DiMillo’s Floating Restaurant in Portland. Proceeds from the auction, which will feature the work of more than 40 local artists, go toward service learning grants for students in the Portland Public Schools.

 | Portland Public Schools’ Third Annual STEM Expo Set for Nov. 4 Posted on 10/27/2016 The Portland Public Schools, in partnership with EnviroLogix, will hold the Third Annual Portland Public Schools’ STEM Exposition on Friday, Nov. 4, at the University of Southern Maine’s Sullivan gymnasium in Portland. More than 1,800 visitors and exhibitors are expected at the 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. event, at which Portland Public Schools’ students, local businesses, and postsecondary schools and other organizations will share their learning in STEM – science, technology, engineering and math.

 | Moore Students to Walk to Benefit the Hungry on Oct. 28 Posted on 10/26/2016 Lyman Moore Middle School’s Third Annual Food Pantry and Care Closet Neighborhood Walk will take place on Friday, Oct. 28. During the walk, students will collect donated goods in the North Deering neighborhoods around the school to support a food pantry that students at the school started three years ago to help classmates and their families.

 | National Merit Semifinalists from Each High School Honored Posted on 10/20/2016 The Portland Board of Public Education and Superintendent Xavier Botana recently recognized four academically talented high school seniors: Rose Griffin from Portland High; Alex Smith from Deering High; and Jasper Sommer and Nathaniel Youngren from Casco Bay High. The students have been named Semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The students are encouraging everyone in the community to wear orange too.

 | Painting for a Purpose Auction Set for Nov. 3 Posted on 10/18/2016 Portland Public Schools’ teachers are among the more than 40 local artists whose artwork will be auctioned off at the Painting for a Purpose annual fall auction on Nov. 3. Some of the artists’ work – in the form of whimsical, colorfully hand-painted wooden fish – can be seen on display before the auction at Arabica Coffee’s Free Street Café in Portland this month.

 | Classes Canceled at DHS, East End School on Election Day Posted on 10/06/2016 Based on the recommendation of Superintendent Xavier Botana, the Portland Board of Public Education has voted to cancel classes for students at Deering High School and East End Community School on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8. Those schools are designated polling places and the high voter turnout anticipated during this year’s general election could disrupt student learning.
