This is the image for the news article titled Enrollment & Facility Study Meeting Jan. 14The Enrollment and Facility Study Commission will hold its next meeting on Monday, Jan. 14, at 6:30 p.m. in room 200 at Casco Bay High School. The commission will focus on looking at current and future enrollment numbers and starting to identify some potential cost-saving efficiencies.

The Portland Public Schools is studying our enrollment and facilities to maximize the effective and efficient use of our school buildings. The need for this was made apparent during the challenging FY 2019 budget process last spring, when it became clear that Portland likely faces a reduction in state funding for the foreseeable future because of such factors as the city’s high property valuation.

As a result, the Portland Board of Public Education resolved to study the district’s enrollment and capacity to identify potential cost-saving efficiencies. An Enrollment and Facility Study Commission – made up of board members, city councilors, district staff, and community members – was formed this past fall to identify and recommend possible efficiencies to the Board by early 2019.

The commission has held three meetings to date. One focused on the budget, a second meeting on our elementary schools and the third was on our secondary schools. At its fourth meeting on Jan. 14, the commission will discuss enrollment numbers. At that meeting, the commission also is expected to begin to develop possible options for efficiencies and cost savings.
