Portland High Presents Mock Debate
On October 29, Portland High School students will hear two well-known local activists, one Republican and one Democrat, debate political issues and the basic philosophies of their parties as it relates to the upcoming presidential election.
The students will have an opportunity to ask questions of former State Senator Ethan Strimling of Portland and former State Senator Phil Harriman of Yarmouth. Strimling, a Democrat, and Harriman a Republican, co-write the “Agree to Disagree” column in the “Bangor Daily New." They also provide political commentary and analysis for WGAN radio and WCSH and WLBZ television stations.
The mock debate was arranged by Eric Moynihan, a newly hired Pathways coordinator based at Portland High. Moynihan and Pam Bessey, a Pathways coordinator based at Deering, are building relationships in the private sector to get students out into the community and to connect teachers with community resources and industry-related guest speakers. The goal is to provide all high school students in the Portland Public Schools with extended learning opportunities such as job shadows, career coaching and internships by the 2013-2014 school year.
