Maine’s first “Girls on the Run” program is taking place this fall at Longfellow Elementary School.  The national program promotes wellness and self-esteem in preteen girls through a curriculum that integrates running.

Thirty-seven Longfellow students in grades three through five are participating in the 10-week, after-school program.  They meet twice a week.

As the girls train for a five-kilometer race, they discuss topics such as fueling your healthy “pace,” building a team and combating gossip.  The curriculum is designed to help the girls enhance their problem-solving skills and make healthy decisions.  They perform a community service project.
