Casco Bay High School (CBHS) runs one-week elective courses called "Intensives" twice a year.  "The Bike Intensive” was a new offering in January.

Twenty CBHS students learned about bike mechanics by repairing bicycles to donate to needy children with the help of local bike mechanics.  In addition, students learned about bike culture by engaging with experts on topics such as urban planning, bike touring in Europe and bike safety.

By week's end, all participants had mastered the basics of bike maintenance.  They also had either analyzed Allen Avenue (the street in front of the school) for its “bike-ability,” or they had learned the basics of bike safety education.

Many community partners helped with the intensive: Bicycle Coalition of Maine, Safe Routes to School program, PACTS, Portland Department of Public Services, Westbrook Alternative Learning, Allspeed Cyclery & Snow and Go Maine.
