Students in the Portland Public Schools are eligible for discounted fares on Greater Portland Transit District METRO during the 2012/2013 school year. Students can ride METRO buses for $1 (regular fare is $1.50) throughout the school year using a current student photo ID. This is the sixth year that METRO has provided discounted bus rides.

Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS) has been awarded a four-year grant from the MELMAC Education Foundation that will acquaint eighth graders with the school’s programs, help PATHS students learn about postsecondary opportunities and involve parents in planning for their children’s futures. The grant will provide $13,500 per year, or a total of $54,000.

The Portland Public Schools and Portland Recreation are sponsoring a “Soccer Highlight Night” on September 6 at multiple locations around the city. All six of the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams at Deering and Portland High will hold head-to-head competitions. Thanks to funding from the Maine Dairy and Nutrition Council’s Dairy Optimization program, Riverton Elementary School dramatically increased the number of students participating in school breakfast during the 2011-12 school year. The district is working to boost that number even higher at Riverton and to help other Portland public schools have similar success.

The Portland Public Schools will no longer use Styrofoam trays in its cafeterias beginning this fall, as part of the district’s ongoing efforts to reduce cafeteria trash. The district will replace Styrofoam trays with paper board trays at an additional cost of $30,000 annually. This increase is offset by the savings anticipated from the Waste Reduction Group’s recycling and composting programs...

More healthy foods will be sold at Portland Public Schools’ sports games and in school vending machines, under new policies that take effect in September. The policies also call for all food served at school celebrations, staff parties and other district events to meet federal nutrition standards. Soda is no longer to be sold, even in the staff lounge.

Five of Portland’s public schools will offer free breakfasts to all of their students for the first time, beginning in September. The Portland Public Schools, a state leader in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicle technology, will take delivery of its 10th CNG school bus this month. CNG buses now make up more than 40 percent of the Portland district’s fleet. All of the vehicles have been funded fully or in part by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection through grants from the Federal Clean School Bus Program.

Bob’s Discount Furniture has awarded Longfellow Elementary School a $1,000 donation. The money will be used for technology. Longfellow is one of seven schools in Maine that received $1,000 awards from Bob’s in a ceremony on August 1 at the South Portland store.
