The Portland Board of Public Education invites the public to a celebration for Portland Superintendent James C. The Student Council at Lyman Moore Middle School recently joined Bangor Savings Bank in their “Spread the Love: Peanut and Butter and Jelly Drive” to help area food banks fill their pantries with jars of peanut butter and jelly. Three Lyman Moore Middle School students were among 12 finalists in Modern Woodmen of America’s Level II speech contest on April 24.  A total of 1,480 students from 25 schools in central and southern Maine entered the contest. The Portland School Board voted at its April 24th business meeting to approve two policies that will encourage healthier eating by students and staff in the Portland Public Schools.  The policies recognize that diet influences students’ ability to learn, and they aim to ensure that food offered at schools and school events support student achievement. Hall Elementary School Principal Kelly Hasson participated in a recent MPBN call-in show about efforts to combat bullying.  She discussed successful efforts at Hall to address the issue.The show also included Stan Davis, a former social worker and guidance counselor who writes and speaks about bullying prevention through his organization, Stop Bullying Now.  Davis has presented workshops at Hall. The Portland School Board has voted its support for a FY 2013 budget totaling $94,948,537 that would double enrollment in the district’s pre-kindergarten program, add Spanish instruction to the fifth grade curriculum and provide a major investment in technology. Read More

Four Deering students and families recently opened their homes and hearts to Chilean teenagers from the Colegios Padre Hurtado y Juanita de los Andes who spent a month in Maine for a cultural exchange coordinated by McAuley, Cheverus and Deering high schools. Portland High School held its 33rd induction ceremony for the National Honor Society on April 4.  Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck was the guest speaker. Students were chosen for the National Honor Society on the basis of scholarship (a 93 or above grade point average), leadership, character and service to school and community.
