Sixth graders at Portland’s Lyman Moore Middle School will host a U.S. naturalization ceremony on April 6 at 10 a.m. at the school, located at 171 Auburn Street. Thirty-eight area residents from 19 countries of origin will be sworn in as citizens. Students at Casco Bay High School (CBHS) will join Moore students at the ceremony. Both schools are integrating the event into their curricula.

Kiana Sawyer, a sophomore at Portland High School, was named runner-up in the Maine Poetry Out Loud competition at Bates College on March 23. MPBN televised the competition live.Kiana came in second out of the 10 students competing in the finals. She won $100, and the Portland High School library will receive $200 to purchase poetry books. The Portland School Board will hold a hearing on the Finance Committee’s proposed FY 2013 budget on April 3 at 7 p.m. in Room 250, Casco Bay High School, 196 Allen Avenue. There will be additional opportunity for public comment on the budget on April 10 (time to be announced) in the same location. The School Board is expected to vote on the budget that night.

Sixth grade students in technology education classes at Lyman Moore Middle School completed a service learning project with the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.Students made and sold weighted hula hoops to raise money for the Animal Refuge League and for Lyman Moore's Wellness Team. They presented a $250 check to Kathleen Fobear, the League's humane education director.

The Portland Public Schools’ food service does not purchase ground beef products containing Lean Finely Textured Beef (LFTB), popularly known as “pink slime.”The district buys precooked beef burgers from a national company that does not use LFTB. In addition, growing portions of Portland’s ground beef purchases are from local companies committed to natural and sustainable farming practices.

Lyseth Elementary School became a “sea of green” on March 16, the day before St. Patrick’s Day, as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society that was organized by fifth grade student Luke Hill.
