Six students from the Portland Public Schools have won honors in Maine’s Scholastic Writing Awards contest. The Southern Maine Writing Project in conjunction with the University of Southern Maine’s Department of Literacy, Language and Culture hosted the contest.  Maine students in grades seven through 12 submitted 130 pieces. The Portland Public Schools’ pre-kindergarten staff will hold a Kindergarten Readiness Night on March 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Longfellow Elementary School, 432 Stevens Avenue.  Portland parents whose children are turning five years old on or before October 15, 2012 are invited to attend the free program. The Deering girls' swim team won the Sportsmanship Award at the Class A State Championships in Orono on February 20.  The team's head coach is Angie Marcotte. Read More

The Deering boys' basketball team coached by Dan LeGage beat Bonny Eagle High School to win the Class A Western Maine championship on February 25 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.Deering will compete against Hampden Academy in the Class A state championship game on March 3 at the civic center.Thanks to John McLaughlin for this photo taken after the Western Maine championship game. Several students from the Portland Public Schools have pieces of art in an exhibit at the Portland Museum of Art that runs February 28 through April 1. Students returning to Ocean Avenue Elementary School (OAES) in Portland after the winter vacation discovered artwork on the walls that looked familiar to some of them.  Over the break, workers installed the two historic murals that had decorated the former Nathan Clifford Elementary School. Kiana Sawyer, a student at Portland High School, was one of five winners at the recent Poetry Out Loud Southern Regional competition in Biddeford. Kiana and the other winners will compete against five winners from the northern regional contest in the statewide competition at Bates College in March.  About 9,000 Maine students competed for the chance to make it to the state contest. The Invisible Children Club at Lyman Moore Middle School recently hosted the "Peace and Love, Hippies and Hearts" school dance to raise money for the education of a girl named Allison who lives in Guatemala City.  Nearly 200 Moore students dressed in 1960s garb helped ensure that Allison can go to school next year.  The dance raised $700.
