The Portland School Board will hold an inauguration ceremony on December 5 at 4 p.m. in the Portland City Council chambers at Portland City Hall. The School Board will inaugurate three members who won reelection: Elizabeth Holton, an At Large representative, Justin Costa, who represents District 4, and Marnie Morrione, who represents District 5.

Two fourth grade classes at Longfellow Elementary School recently met dogs trained to assist blind and visually impaired adults. Kathy Hanley, Longfellow’s librarian, arranged the visit because one of this year’s Maine Student Book Award nominees, “How I, Nicky Flynn, Finally Get a Life (and a dog)” by Art Corriveau, tells the story of a relationship between a boy and a guide dog.

Students at Hall Elementary School and Portland High School teamed up this month to collect food for the Wayside Food Programs. Hall students brought boxes, bags and cans of non-perishable items to school, and Portland High students also donated food. Presumpscot Elementary School teachers Rebecca Maiorano, Suzanne Keller and Elizabeth Stover approached FoodCorps volunteer Nora Saks at the beginning of the school year with the idea of starting an after-school garden club. Elizabeth Holton was reelected to an At Large seat on the Portland School Board in the November 8 election. Holton defeated Josephine Okot by a vote of 8,738 to 5,747. Justin Costa and Marnie Morrione were reelected to the School Board in uncontested races. Costa represents District 4 and Morrione represents District 5.

Jocelyn Kahn, a Portland jeweler and photographer, recently visited the metalsmithing class at Deering High School. She shared her craft of recycling dominoes into jewelry by using stamps, makers and acrylic coatings.Kahn brought examples of her own work and provided a hands-on workshop for students.
