Casco Bay High School (CBHS) has received two grants totaling $42,000 to support an adventure-based orientation program for all freshmen and seniors that includes kayaking and camping on islands in Casco Bay with their advisory groups and writing about their experiences. Children in the early childhood program at Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS) recently visited the school’s greenhouse to learn all about apples. Students in the PATHS landscape and gardens class taught the preschoolers about different types of apples, how to grow them organically and the parts of apples. They told the children the story of Johnny Appleseed.

A University of Maine Cooperative Extension nutrition educator and two diet tech interns from Southern Maine Community College recently conducted an apple taste testing with 150 students at Hall Elementary School. Of four apples tested, the favorite by far was the Chestnut Crab, a crab apple. The other varieties sampled were Wolf River, Gala and Honey Crisp.

Lyseth Elementary School has received nearly $1,000 of seeds and other gardening supplies, including a grow light lab with timers and books about integrating gardens into classroom teaching. The National Gardening Association provided the materials as a result of a grant application submitted by the Lyseth Garden Club.

Deering High School in Portland will hold an informational night for students and parents about Internet safety and cyber bullying on October 6 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the school library. The public is invited to attend free of charge. The event will tell parents about techniques for keeping their children safe on the Internet. For more information, please call 874-8260.

The Deering Outdoor Club recently went on a camping trip to Woodstock, Maine. Nine students and two teachers hiked up Bald Mountain and swam in a cold but refreshing mountain pond. At night, they sat around a large fire and ate s'mores. Many students spent their first night ever sleeping in a tent under the stars.

Elementary students in the Portland Public Schools will enjoy Maine-grown foods as part of school lunch during Maine Harvest Lunch week (September 19-23). Students at Longfellow Elementary School will shuck corn on September 20 at 1:30 p.m. The corn from Belanger Farm will be served as part of Maine Harvest Lunch.

Four young people from the nonprofit group, Invisible Children, will visit Moore Middle School in Portland on September 23 to talk about their experiences working to raise awareness about the use of child soldiers in Uganda and surrounding countries. One of the presenters, Grace Nimaro, is a recent college graduate who spent her childhood in war-torn northern Uganda.

The Portland School Board voted at its September 13th meeting to approve creation of a single, school-wide athletic booster club at Portland High School and a similar club at Deering High School. The school-wide clubs will replace those that have raised money for individual sports teams and other extracurricular activities.

Two Portland Public Schools - Casco Bay High School (CBHS) and King Middle School - have been designated as Expeditionary Learning Mentor Schools for the 2011-2012 academic year.
