The Deering High School Outdoor Club kayaked to Little Chebeague Island in early June for an overnight trip.  Eight students, two teachers and a guide kayaked four hours into Casco Bay, past Peaks Island and Great Diamond Island.  The group hiked around Little Chebeague and camped on a beach.  It rained nearly the entire trip, but that only enhanced the adventure of it all.        Read More

Lincoln Middle School's literacy classes that use two intensive reading programs (Read 180 and System 44) set a goal of reading 5 million words.  They exceeded that goal by 500,000 words, for a total of 5.5 million words. Audrey Danforth, program Implementation manager for Scholastic, provided lunch for the 131 students as part of a reading celebration.  Every student received a book and a pen. The first graders at East End Community School recently studied Maine forest animals.  Kiley Perry's class helped the animal's habitat right next to tthe school by working with Portland Trails to plant flowers at the entrance of the Midslope Trail.The class also helped spread mulch to make the trail fresh.  All of the students worked hard to weed, plant and rake the area around the trail. ... University Credit Union adopted Lincoln Middle School for the 2010-11 school year.  The credit union gave Lincoln a $600 check raised by credit union employees through fund raisers such as casual dress day and candle sales.  Read More

Eighth graders in Todd Day’s and Sue Wilson’s social studies classes at Lincoln Middle School will participate in a Civil War lesson and reenactment on June 9 at 10:30 a.m. at the school.   The 3rd Maine reenactment group will give a lesson on Civil War uniforms and details of soldiering.  They also will perform a Civil War military drill and training on the Lincoln school grounds.     Read More

 Riverton Elementary School’s media center will be transformed into a café filled with books, poems and other work written by students on June 8 and 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.   Two classes at a time will visit the center to read their peers’ work during the school’s annual Author Share.  Riverton families also are invited to attend. Portland Adult Education (PAE) will hold its graduation ceremony on  June 9 at 6 p.m. at Merrill Auditorium.   A total of 34 students attained high school diplomas, and 176 students passed the GED test.  The public is invited to attend this inspirational ceremony.
