School-site health promotion and wellness programs encourage and support school staff in pursuing healthful behaviors and lifestyles.  Employee wellness programs encourage all staff to pursue a healthy lifestyle.  Portland Public Schools understands that employee wellness is an important link in the wellness of our school community.  Employee wellness proliferates learning in our schools.

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”  -World Health Organization, 1948

National Employee Health and Fitness Day – May 19, 2010

In recognition the importance of health and wellness and in honor of the hard work and dedication of our staff - Portland Public Schools is proud to be celebrating National Employee Health and Fitness Day on May 19, 2010.  Activities for this special day include:

  •       Fruit and vegetable trays in every staff room
  •       Portland Free Places to Play Maps for every employee
  •       Prize drawings for employees who walk or bike at least part way to work
  •       PPS Employee Baxter Boulevard walk/run with prize drawings

May 19th is also Walk and Bike to Work/School Week.  We encourage all employees who are interested to walk or bike at least part way to school that day.  You could even meet up with colleagues nearby and walk or bike together.  Send an email to Chanda Turner, School Health Coordinator, about your walking or biking to school experience and you’ll be entered in a prize drawing.

More information about the Baxter Boulevard walk will be forthcoming.

Our NEHF Day celebration is made possible with special support from Healthy Portland and the PPS School Health Leadership Team.  For more information, please contact Chanda Turner, School Health Coordinator at turnecatportlandschools [dot] org or (207) 842-5256.
