Students, Families Invited to Martin Luther King Day Events Jan. 16
Monday, Jan. 16, is the day on which the nation will observe the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday in 2017. The NAACP Portland Branch has scheduled several events that provide opportunities for students and adults to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King. One event is for older students, one is for younger students and families, and an evening dinner is for adults and teens. All will take place at the Holiday Inn by the Bay, located at 88 Spring St.
The day starts with a youth summit hosted by the Martin Luther King Jr. Fellows, a youth leadership organization with a mission to advance racial equity and social justice in the Greater Portland area. The 2nd Annual King Fellows Youth Summit will run from 9 a.m. to noon. Attendees will explore the goals of the My Brother's Keeper Initiative, launched by President Obama to improve life outcomes for young people of color, and discuss efforts to implement this locally. The event is free but registration is required. Learn more and register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2nd-annual-king-fellows-youth-summit-i-am-my-brothers-and-sisters-keeper-tickets-30802696695
Families of students in kindergarten through grade 8 are encouraged to attend a Family Celebration at the hotel from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and will feature theater, music and the visual arts. The Family Celebration is sponsored by the NAACP and hosted by Goodwill of Northern New England, One Tree Wholistic Learning Center and the Portland Housing Authority.
The day’s activities will end with a reception and dinner celebration from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This ticketed program is suitable for those 14 years and older.
